A first of its kind: grid connection for the Moray East Offshore Windfarm project
  • Clean electricity for up to one million Scottish households
  • Siemens is leading the market for the grid connection of offshore wind power

In a world’s first, Siemens Energy is connecting three Offshore Transformer Modules® (OTM®), its range of AC offshore substation platforms, and will transmit the power generated from the 950MW Moray East Offshore Windfarm project, located 22km off the Aberdeenshire coast in Scotland.
On June 30, 2020, the first OTM began its journey from the fabricator to be installed at the offshore windfarm. The remaining two will sail out in the following months when commissioning will take place. The OTM, which are significantly smaller in size and weight compared to conventional alternating current platforms, will transform the output of the wind turbines from 66 kilovolts (kV) to the transmission voltage of 220kV.
In 2018 Siemens Energy secured the contract to connect the wind farm to the grid and until today Moray East Offshore Windfarm represents the company’s largest UK grid access project. The scope of supply includes the complete onshore substation including three SVC PLUS (STATCOM) as well as the three offshore substation platform topsides. In addition, Siemens Energy will install a 35km underground export cable to the onshore substation at New Deer in Aberdeenshire for the power generated. The windfarm will be capable of providing low cost, low carbon power to approximately one million Scottish homes, making a significant contribution to meeting net zero ambitions.
Siemens Energy is a market leader in connecting offshore wind to the grid, with 6.5 gigawatts (GW) connected to date and a further 4.5GW under construction. Using its state-of-the art OTM technology the company continues to innovate and find ways to drive down costs for developers worldwide while meeting the energy demands of the future.

Press Releases

First Moray East onshore transformer arrives on site

30 Oct 2019, Following a 1,500-kilometre journey by river, sea and road, the first transformer was delivered by Siemens to the onshore substation at New Deer for the Moray East offshore windfarm development.

Major milestone met on Moray East Offshore Windfarm project

17 Jul 2019, The Moray East offshore windfarm project completed its first fabrication milestone as Thurso SME engineering firm, JGC Engineering and Technical Services, finalised work on the containers which will be fitted with either high voltage transmission equipment or electrical monitoring and control equipment for the three offshore substation platforms.

Multi-million contracts placed with UK companies for onshore transmission infrastructure for the Moray East Offshore Windfarm

12 Jul 2019, Siemens has placed multi-million pound contracts with companies across the UK for the construction of the transmission infrastructure for the Moray East Offshore Windfarm. As the lead contractor for onshore transmission infrastructure construction works for the 950MW windfarm, Siemens has placed several subcontracts since work began in September 2018.

The sail out of the first Offshore Transformer Module® (OTM®) is an important milestone for the development of the Moray East windfarm, located 22 kilometers off the Aberdeenshire coast in Scotland. To deliver the windfarm’s rated capacity of 950 megawatts, Siemens Energy will connect, in a world’s first, three OTMs.
The three Offshore Transformer Modules ® fabricated for the grid connection of the Moray East Offshore Windfarm are an essential part of wind farm’s electrical network transmitting the energy generated by the wind turbines to shore.
